Inside: Discover all the little-known benefits of Amazon Prime membership.
If you aren’t already using Amazon Prime, it may be because you think the only benefit is free 2-day shipping. I used to think that as well! But you could be missing out on so many other perks as we were. There are other benefits of Amazon Prime membership that just may convince you to give it a try.
Amazon keeps experimenting and adding new benefits for its members and if a couple of these are things you would use, then membership could save you quite a bit of money over your current subscription options.
1. Free shipping
The most well-known benefits of Amazon Prime membership is free 2-day shipping on tens of millions of items. This has saved us when we’ve been packing for a camping trip and, oops, forgot we needed a new fiberglass rod to repair the tent.
What is less well-known is that in select metro areas, there is also free same-day or free one-day delivery available on some items as well. Amazon Prime Now is available in some larger metro areas and offers free 2-hour shipping on groceries and essentials.
2. Movies and TV Shows
Are you looking to drop cable? Prime Video has a selection of movies and TV shows available for members to stream or download for free.
I like the movie selection but have recently discovered some TV series developed only for Amazon as well as other popular series that are excellent. This is one of the benefits of Amazon Prime that we use almost daily.
3. Amazon channels
If you want to drop cable, but still want access to some premium networks, Amazon Channels lets you have access to dozens of networks, each for a low monthly fee which you can cancel at any time. No contracts! If you are unsure, there is a 7-day free trial period available.
4. Early access to Lightning Deals
Amazon has Lightning Deals which are deals that are available for a limited time. Prime members get early access to the deals (30 minutes early). This can be especially beneficial during the peak holiday shopping season.
5. Prime Pantry
Prime Pantry is a resource for finding everyday household items and the hard-to-find ingredients. Want to try a new recipe but your grocery store doesn’t carry that certain spice or another ingredient you need? Chances are you will be able to order it from Amazon. Same with the hypoallergenic detergent and the special vitamins you are wanting to try.
6. Kindle First
The Kindle First program is another benefit available to prime members. Each month, editors choose six new books. Prime members are able to select one of the books each month for free. If you don’t have a Kindle, you can download a free Kindle app to your computer or device.
7. Prime Music
I used to often have music of some sort playing in the background and then, for some reason, stopped doing so. A couple years ago I realized I needed music again. After researching different free music services and getting fed up with ads, I realized that my Prime membership had the benefit of access to ad-free streaming music.
Prime Music has over 2 million songs available, including curated playlists. I can cue up a favorite artist or bring up playlists perfect for rainy days, holidays, or a fast-paced workout.
8. Photo storage
Are you looking for a place to store all those digital photos? Another of the benefits of Amazon Prime is they offer unlimited photo storage. You can access your photos from all of your web, iOS or Android devices.
9. Audible Channels
Prime membership now also provide free access to original audio series and playlists from Audible. There are comedians, articles, audiobooks, and series available. It’s a great way to make the commute feel a bit easier or listen to your favorite series while you are cooking.
10. Twitch Prime
As a Prime member, you get access to Twitch Prime. The program lets you view Twitch ad-free, get bonus in-game loot each month, and discounts on new release box games. It is perfect for the game or comic lover in your family.
11. Prime Reading
If you are a reader, then one of the best benefits of Amazon Prime membership is Prime Reading. It gives you access to books, comics, and magazines from a list of about 1000 titles that is refreshed every month.
If you don’t have a Kindle, you can use the free app on most devices. Magazines are current issues of popular titles and some of the books even have Audible Narration.
12. Release-date delivery
Have you ever wanted to get a book, movie, or game as soon as it is available? For select items, Prime members are able to pre-order and get release-date delivery.
13. Amazon Family
If you have small children or are expecting, you can sign up for Amazon Family (included with Amazon Prime) to get discounted subscription prices on diapers and other family related discounts.
14. Washington Post
Yes, it is true. Yet another benefit of Amazon Prime is that you can get a free 6-month subscription to The Washington Post online. After that, the subscription fee is heavily discounted.
15. Prime Student
Are you a student with a valid school email (.edu) address? If so, you can use Prime Student for free for 6 months and after that, membership is discounted 50% and you still get access to all the Prime benefits!
Are the benefits of Amazon Prime worthwhile?
Is Amazon Prime worth it? For what we use it for, definitely! We use many of the benefits they offer and shop frequently enough on Amazon that the membership fee actually saves us money overall.
But, if you are someone that doesn’t shop online or even go online very often, then you may first want to give it a test drive before committing. You can signup for a 30-day free trial to see if it is right for you. But mark your calendar! Once the trial period is over, the membership fee will be charged to your credit card unless you cancel.
